Schools
Welcome to the school goalball page. Currently the only place to play
school goalball is fortnightly at Toynbee School on a Friday between 15:05
and 16:30. The first part of the year has seen a dedicated group of players
training hard each session. The final half term leading up to Easter will be
a league. There are 2 development and 2 experienced teams. Details of the
league to date can be found on the competitions page. We have 20 players (10
in each section) with a range of ages (year 6 to year 11), pupils from
Toynbee and other schools, and a mixture of VI and sighted pupils.
The school goalball has developed over the last 5 years and we now have a
solid player pathway from grass roots to club and national level and beyond,
if skilled. We are able to coach players of all abilities and experiences
and can address both goalball specific skills as well as addressing the
wider needs of long term athlete development (whether it is FUNdamentals and
ABC or Gifted and Talented, using the JAE scheme).
We have had a number of Toynbee VI pupils taking GCSE PE who have used or
will be using goalball as one of their assessed sports, as well as having
included goalball in the mainstream KS 3 and 4 PE lessons on occasion for
whole classes. If any teacher / school would like further support or advice
including INSET on including goalball in PE, please contact me.
If you are a school pupil living / attending school in Hampshire and
would like to have a go at playing goalball, email Thom Norton on chair@hi-vis.org and
we can look at ways in which we can help you out. Don't worry if you are the
only pupil in your school with a visual impairment, you can play with your
sighted friends.
If you are already playing goalball in your school and would like to
organize a fixture, again contact Mr. Carter.
Our aims are:
- To have in the county an active schools league and cup.
- For other counties in the SE / SW region to develop a similar set up and
have inter-county fixtures and cup.
- To maintain our school club link with HGA so there are pathways for
players from grass roots to elite.
- To encourage more girls to play goalball.
We have come along way since introducing goalball to the school and
Hampshire five years ago and we feel we have really only just begun.
Goalball is a great sport to play and so we all would encourage as many of
you to take it up.
